Commonwealth University-Mansfield voice students win recognition at singing auditions, competition
Voice students from Commonwealth University-Mansfield recently won recognition at the Allegheny Mountain Chapter (AMC) National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions, held Nov. 16 at Penn State University. There were approximately 100 audition entries from around Pennsylvania.
Commonwealth University Students Named to PSAC Scholar Athlete List
Nearly 600 Commonwealth University student-athletes have been named to the 2023-24 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Scholar-Athlete award list. Student-athletes must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25 upon completion of the academic year to be eligible for the PSAC Scholar-Athlete Award. Overall, the PSAC honored 4,036 student-athletes from the league's 18 institutions after the conclusion of the 2023-24 academic year as PSAC Scholar-Athletes. The 2023-24 PSAC Scholar-Athlete total of 4,036 (52% of the entire PSAC student-athlete population) marks the ninth straight year the PSAC has awarded at least 40% of its student-athlete population with "Scholar-Athlete" status. The total number of PSAC Scholar-Athletes increased from 2022-23's total by 199.

CU-Lock Haven celebrates new educators during teacher induction ceremony
This spring, Commonwealth University-Lock Haven celebrated 56 student teachers during the semi-annual Student Teacher Induction and Pinning Ceremony held in the Parsons Union Building. After successfully completing their placements the student teachers were honored during the program designed to celebrate the hard work, dedication and commitment of prospective teachers. To begin the program, Dr. Sherry E. Griggs, director of teacher preparation, clinical ractice and certification, welcomed the administration, faculty, staff, guest speakers, student teachers, family members and guests. Dr. Ann Larson, dean of the College of Education and Human Studies, also greeted the audience and offered remarks. The program continued with remarks from the keynote speaker, Tammie Burnaford, superintendent of the Bellefonte Area School District and comments from alumna, Jennifer Reibson, a health and physical education teacher in Central Mountain High School in the Keystone Central School District. Following the speakers, each student received a circle of children lapel pin, which represents four positive skills in the continuous circle of teaching and learning: cooperation, togetherness, unity and acceptance. The evening concluded with opportunities for photographs and a reception.

Commonwealth University education majors get sneak peek into teaching and classroom management through Williamsport partnership
More than 30 education majors from Commonwealth University's Bloomsburg, Lock Haven and Mansfield locations recently got an inside look at each level of public education thanks to a collaborative project with the Williamsport Area School District. The district-wide Field Day experience was made possible by to a $9,000 Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) mini grant awarded to Dr. Priya Poehner, professor of education at CU-Lock Haven, and Dr. Daniel Roesch, associate professor of teaching and learning at CU-Bloomsburg, to promote "Sweetening the Teaching Experience" and to focus on building partnerships with area schools.

CU-Lock Haven Students Meet with State Rep. Ismail Smith-Wade-El
Students with the Commonwealth University-Lock Haven Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club and the Black Student Union met with State Rep. Ismail "Izzy" Smith-Wade-El (D-Lancaster) at the PA State Capitol Building on Monday, April 29. Students learned about internships and public affairs issues. Rep. Smith-Wade-El identifies as queer and is an advocate for public higher education, racial equity and LGBTQ concerns. The visit was coordinated by Dr. Rick Schulze, chairperson, CU-Lock Haven Commission on LGBTQ Affairs; Patricia Hunter, MA, LPC, counselor; and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

6 CU-Mansfield Students Initiated into History Honor Society
Six students were initiated into the Alpha-Iota-Beta Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society at CU-Mansfield on Monday, April 15. Requirements for initiation include completion of four history courses, 3.0 overall GPA and 3.25 GPA in history.

Commonwealth University students return to Jamaica to provide service to the community of Harmons
A team of Commonwealth University students recently returned to the small community of Harmons, Jamaica, along with faculty members, Jennifer Bell, physician assistant studies and Amy Way, health and exercise science. The 18 undergraduate and five physician assistant graduate students represented the Lock Haven, Bloomsburg and Clearfield campuses. This is the seventh service-learning program to Jamaica for Lock Haven students led by Bell and Way and the second for Commonwealth University.

On Thursday, Sept. 28, Commonwealth University-Clearfield held its 34th annual Founders' Day convocation awards celebration in the Clearfield Academic Building multipurpose room. The event, hosted by the Clearfield Educational Foundation and CU-Clearfield, honored 22 students with awards and scholarships.

Commonwealth University students travel to Belize to research politics, culture, economy
Fourteen Commonwealth University students, from the Mansfield and Lock Haven campuses, recently returned from studying abroad in the Central American country of Belize. The students were part of a faculty-led, short-term study abroad program that has been introducing students to Belize since 2014.
